A series of tests was carried out on welded built-up model struts to verify the validity of the Canadian Standard S16.1-M89. Three parameters were studied: the separation between the main members, the number of connectors, and the slenderness ratio of the built-up strut acting as an integral unit. The buckling load and load-deflection curve, of each specimen, were determined from the tests. The results of this investigation showed that there was a discrepancy in the Canadian Standard S16.1-M89, in that the requirement that the maximum slenderness ratio of an individual main member should be equal to or less than the integral slenderness ratio, does not agree with the experimental results, whereas the requirement that the maximum slenderness ratio of an individual main member should be less than 40 or 60% of the slenderness ratio of the built-up column about the axis perpendicular to the batten plates, does verify the experimental results. The experimental results also showed that built-up struts in which the main members are in contact had extra rigidity. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
