Bio Statement

Ornella Nzindukiyimana is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Kinetics at St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, NS) where she teaches history and sociology of sport. Her work focuses on the historical study of intersection of race, gender, and class in sport, particularly in the Canadian historical context. Recent research, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s (SSHRC) Doctoral Award and the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC), explored Black Canadian women’s sport experiences in Ontario in the first half of the 20th century. Other work has centred on early 20th century Black Canadian sport ‘heroes,’ such as sprinter John ‘Army’ Howard and boxer Larry Gains.
