Proposal
In this engaging session, we will explore the exciting intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and course design, specifically focusing on utilizing project-based assessments and real-world examples to encourage higher-level thinking among high school students. We will explore how this can be done in humanities, math and options courses while reducing student reliance on googling or leveraging AI to complete assignments and continuing to maintain the fundamentals. As AI continues to advance, it becomes crucial for educators to adapt their teaching methodologies to ensure students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that surpass the capabilities of AI systems. By incorporating project-based assessments, students are challenged to apply their knowledge in practical scenarios, fostering creativity, collaboration, and independent thinking. Throughout this session, we will delve into effective strategies for designing project-based assessments that require students to engage deeply with the subject matter. We will explore how to scaffold projects, provide guidance, and establish clear evaluation criteria to ensure students' success while promoting autonomous learning. To further enhance the learning experience, we will discuss the significance of integrating real-world examples into course materials. By connecting academic concepts to real-life applications, students gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter and develop a broader perspective. Real-world examples also facilitate critical thinking by presenting complex problems that may not have clear-cut solutions, challenging students to analyze, evaluate, and propose innovative approaches. Throughout this session, participants will have the opportunity to engage in collaborative discussions, share their experiences, and learn from best practices in AI and course design. By the end of the session, attendees will have gained practical insights and strategies to incorporate project-based assessments and real-world examples into their courses, empowering students to develop essential skills that transcend the capabilities of AI systems.
