UWill Discover Journal Research Reflection

Carol Adu-Bobie, University of Windsor

Proposal

This presentation focuses on my role as a Student Editor for the first UWill Discover Journal, a student-led publication featuring award-winning research and creative work from the UWill Discover Conference. Along with peers and faculty advisors, the team collected and edited submissions using a hybrid of the Human Development and Capability Approach (HDCA) and Kolb’s Learning Cycle. HDCA is a framework focused on the individuals’ well-being, moving away from economic resources to focus on capabilities and opportunities to lead meaningful lives (Alkire & Deneulin, 2009). Along with Kolb’s Learning Cycle which describes a person’s learning process as a combination of hands-on experiences, theory development, and reflection (Kolb & Kolb, 2017). The journal’s objective is to showcase research projects across faculties and offer undergraduate students the opportunity to be published on an institutional repository called scholar.uwindsor.ca. Ultimately, this journal stands as a testament to students' contributions, magnifying the role of undergraduate students in research, enabling them to articulate their involvement, while simultaneously providing professors a chance to mold future scholars (Walkington, 2015). Through the publication of this journal, students receive due recognition for their dedication and provide models of learning for future undergraduate students.
