SDG-8 Economic Growth and Decent Work

Travis Loughead, University of Windsor
Anthony Idone, University of Windsor

Proposal

This presentation will focus on the United Nations Social Development Goal (SDG) #8, Economic Growth and decent work. Presenters Travis Loughead and Anthony Idone are both 1st-year business students at the University of Windsor, who are currently both in the Outstanding Scholars program. The goal of SDG #8 is defined as “to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all”. Within our presentation, we will define what decent work and economic growth mean individually and as a collective. Next, we will present two cases of labour abuse. We focus on a local example with Leamington agricultural migrant workers, and migrant worker abuse at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. We will demonstrate why both these cases are unethical and unsustainable, and why both these examples can’t be considered decent work. Furthermore, we will talk about the negative implications of unsustainable work and why that can damage our society. Also, we will provide strategies and initiatives governments and businesses can take to both promote sustainable growth and decent work. Lastly, we will cover ways the individual consumer can promote SDG #8 through their purchasing habits, causes the individual supports, and possible charitable endeavours. We will conclude by summarizing our discussion and summarizing why decent work and economic growth is an important SDG to promote.
