UWill Discover Model United Nations

Sona Regonda, University of Windsor
Jana Jandal Alrifai, University of Windsor
Anastasia Kulaga, University of Windsor
Kayla Jakobszen, University of Windsor

Proposal

Every year, University of Windsor students reach new heights and diversify their experiences across the globe. This past November, four students represented South Africa at the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in Washinton, D.C. NMUN is a simulation mimicking real United Nations meetings; students role-play various nations to discuss and solve current issues while considering relevant policies and populations. The experience allowed Windsor’s NMUN team to become active citizens and learn to analyze issues through different perspectives while minimizing biases, effectively discussing conflicts, and collaboratively developing resolutions. The team praises the conference for vastly improving their professional networking skills. The NMUN team aims to bring acquired knowledge from the conference to Windsor by highlighting their experience in a podcast and hosting a local Model United Nations (MUN) conference. As a part of the competition, participants will represent an assigned country whose background they will research. Students will submit a position paper detailing their stance and how their nation wishes to address a given problem. The NMUN team will also host a position paper workshop before the event. Finally, students will participate in a live MUN simulation with the UWill Discover conference to uniquely enhance communication and critical thinking.
