Abstract
Body Schemas is a collection of prose poem portraits that locates the experience of disability in body parts seeking to explore the lived, physical experience of the body rather than notions of disability as solely a social and cultural construct. It includes prostheses and other equipment in its consideration of the body. Body Schemas utilizes plain language in moments of medical discourse to problematize and talk back to the medical model, whose language has often characterized disabled experiences and lives. It seeks to find new language for these experiences, on our own terms.
