Abstract

Background: New graduate nurses (NGNs) may experience transition shock during their first 18 months of nursing practice; this transition can be emotionally, physically, mentally, and intellectually challenging, leading to thoughts of changing jobs. The Korean Transition Shock Scale for Newly Graduated Nurses (TSS-NGN) was found to be a good transition shock measurement tool; however, it is not validated for use in English-speaking nurses. Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to translate the TSS-NGN from Korean to English and then to evaluate the face validity and feasibility of using the instrument in English-speaking NGN populations. A cross-sectional test of the TSS-NGN (English) (TSS-NGN (ENG)) was also done with NGNs. Methods: The 18-item TSS-NGN was translated into English by two separate translators, and back-translated to assess accuracy by a third translator. Then, it was reviewed by expert panelists and a group of NGNs. Lastly, the English version was tested with NGNs with less than 18 months of experience, using an online Qualtrics® survey. The survey explored NGNs’ understanding of the translated items as it related to their experiences as NGNs. Results: Modifications to item wordings were made during the translation process and panel review. In the cross-sectional test, NGN participants (n=47) indicated good understanding of the meaning of the items on the English scale. Written responses revealed that NGNs understood the translated items’ meaning, and garnered insight into the difficult transition experiences of NGNs. Conclusion: The TSS-NGN(ENG) was found to be effective for use in the NGN population. Feasibility was established, and refinements to certain survey items are suggested. Further research and full validation of the TSS-NGN(ENG) are important to assess the experiences of NGNs in English-speaking populations.
