Abstract
"Uses histories of immigrant Catalan printer and Cuban medical charlatan to examine conflicting cultural currents in early-20th-century Costa Rica. Printer epitomized successful 'self-made' man, but failed when attempted more socially prestigious occupation of coffee sales. Charlatan exploited social space for 'miracles, marvels, and magic' present even in modernizing Costa Rica of 1930s"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
