Abstract
This presentation examines the relationship between animal cruelty and human violence and in using published literature and events from around the world, will show that there is a significant connection. The presentation aims to point out gaps within the Canadian criminal justice system when it comes to prosecuting animal cruelty offenders.
Animal cruelty is often seen as a minor offence, and not as gateway crime or a red flag for further acts of violence. Not to suggest that all animal cruelty offenders go on to harm people, but many factors need to be taken into account when sentencing these individuals.
This presentation calls for more research to be done within Canada in order to solidify the link between animal cruelty and human violence in order to potentially change sentencing principles around animal cruelty offences.
