Abstract
Leadership is as an important aspect in society, yet most of society’s understanding of leadership comes from adults who may not fully recognize the barriers facing today’s youth. There is a definitive barrier between what students experience and what adults perceive regarding leadership opportunities. This study examines how teachers in core city schools create environments and opportunities that foster leadership in students. The central question guiding this study is: From the teachers' perspective, what techniques do teachers find most beneficial for developing student leaders in core city schools? Through interviews with teachers at core city schools, the study develops criteria and baselines for finding potential leaders. This can provide appropriate opportunities for the future development of student leadership voices within core city schools.
