Importance of the Project

Our goal is to increase the effectiveness of endometrial ablation so that repeat surgery will hopefully rarely, if ever, be necessary. Different methods that are currently being researched by Dr. Vilos include endometrial ablation followed by insertion of a Mirena, and endometrial ablation followed by a single injection of Depomedroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) in the recovery room. The latter is the project that I am focusing on. This research has the potential to be extremely useful. If our data show that a single injection of DMPA can increase the rate of amenorrhea or hypomenorrhea post-endometrial ablation, and decrease the rate of re-intervention, then it could very well lead to a change in Gynecology guidelines on the treatment of HMB.
