As members of the Outstanding Scholars Candidate Program, we were encouraged to delve deeper into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. Energy is something we often take for granted in our lives, but it is estimated that 13% of the world does not have access to any form of energy. 1.6 million deaths on average per year are caused by air pollution from burning fuels such as dung. The United Nations’ goal is to allow for the entire world to have access to affordable and clean energy. In our research, we elaborated upon two specific targets of this SDG (Sustainable Development Goals); ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services by 2023 and substantially increasing renewable energy in the global energy mix. Canada is investing millions of dollars into this energy crisis to reduce their carbon footprint and lead research in this domain. The University of Windsor has many initiatives to help achieve this goal, from developing sustainable fuels to designing innovative clean energy systems. We end our research with simple efforts we can do together to make a difference not only in Canada, but the entire world.
